MUSICALITY
"Without music, life would be a mistake."
Friedrich Nietzsche
For Tomatis, a good musical ear means an ear that corresponds as well as possible to the functional criteria he has defined very precisely. A musical ear must have the following characteristics:
-
The focus of the analytical ability must be in the higher frequencies between 2,000 and 5,000 Hz, while the frequencies below 2,000 Hz and above 5,000 Hz are perceived as attenuated. This attenuation must occur in both air conduction and bone conduction.
-
The auditory selectivity must be maximally open. Selectivity is the ability to distinguish the pitch of different tones, but also the direction of pitch change.
-
Sounds must be able to be spatially located very precisely, both in air and in bone conduction.
-
The right ear must be the leading ear, i.e. it must be slightly ahead of the left ear when processing the sound information.
From the beginning of his work with singers and musicians, Tomatis proved the existence of a leading right ear in the analysis and control of sound (including one's own voice). This preponderance of the right ear has since been confirmed many times.
Depending on the impaired frequency zones determined in the hearing test and in relation to the aforementioned criteria of musical hearing, Tomatis hearing training can have an effect in the following areas:
-
Increase in musical sensitivity and desire to listen to music or play an instrument
-
Increasing the accuracy and precision of sound analysis and instrumental skills
-
Greater appreciation for the beauty of music and for the quality of interpretation
